Message from the President

As we head into the busy coating season, we see the demand for our products remaining strong. Our March revenue was the highest for any March in the history of Aldo Products.

We attribute Aldo’s revenue growth to several factors including warm first quarter weather in the markets we serve, increased demand for premium roof coatings and the success of our growing sales network. Our manufacturing and office staff is to be commended for their continuing ability to ship over 90% of all orders within 48 hours. This responsiveness is consistent with the service culture that is an integral part of Aldo.

We find many reasons to be optimistic for the future including improving economic indicators, pent up demand for coating products and an expanded ALDOCOAT product line. There is a growing momentum for the coatings industry thanks to successful efforts by the Reflective Roof Coating Institute and its membership in spreading the word about the benefits of white reflective elastomeric coatings.

Finally, we will continue to be active in trade shows and industry functions. Look for us at the BOMA Atlanta show in May and the FRSA in Orlando in June. And if you cannot attend, just follow me on Twitter to hear what you may be missing.

New Products Added to ALDOCOAT Line

Aldo is pleased to announce the following enhancements to the ALDOCOAT product line.

ALDOCOAT 386 Polyurethane (White), an aliphatic urethane formulation, is a highly anticipated new elastomeric. Bright white in color, this single component coating offers high solar reflectance per its CRRC rating and is ideal for use over spray polyurethane foam, asphalt roofs, or over ALDOCOAT 384 in single ply restoration projects.

ALDOCOAT 395 Silicone is a high performance product typically applied over spray polyurethane foam or as a single ply restoration product. It is also applied over a base coat of ALDOCOAT 384 when a bright white silicone coating is specified.

Jon Palmisciano Joins Aldo as Sales Consultant for Florida and Caribbean

Jon “JP” Palmisciano, has joined Aldo to handle business development in Florida and the Caribbean. JP has been in the elastomeric coatings industry for more than 25 years and brings extensive experience with elastomeric coatings, spray polyurethane foam, industrial maintenance coatings and architectural finishes. We are pleased to have JP aboard and look forward to working with him to expand Aldo’s customer base and brand in Florida and the Caribbean.

Bob Mahaney, who addressed customer sales efforts in Florida and the Caribbean previously, has had his territory expanded to include Virginia and Tennessee in addition to the Carolinas and Georgia. Bob has done a tremendous job with Aldo over the last three years and is assisting us in the transition with JP and the many Aldo customers in Florida.

Case Study: EPDM Roof System 150,000 Square Foot Facility

Issue: The owner of this 150,000 square foot facility had a roof problem that he needed to address before it started affecting the building contents, operations and structure itself. The roof was made up of two systems: an EPDM black membrane comprising 75% of the roof and a gravel BUR over the other 25%. The gravel BUR section seemed to be performing well without any leaks. However, the black rubber EPDM system had been in service for more than 20 years and was leaking. Replacement of the EPDM roof would be very costly and also result in business interruption during the roof tear and replacement process.

Solution: The building owner, a real estate investor involved in managing numerous properties himself, knew that the black EPDM roof was absorbing and transmitting heat into the building during the area’s hot Virginia summers. This proactive and conscientious owner investigated all options to restore the roof, deciding to apply a reflective roof coating over the EPDM portion of the roof.

After conducting his due diligence and exploring several roof coating options, the building owner chose the white reflective ALDOCOAT 660 Thermoplastic Coating for his roof system. After pressure washing to thoroughly clean the surface, the roofing contractor sealed all seams and potential penetration points with ALDOSEAL 747. The coatings were then applied as specified with a medium gray base coat and top white finish coat.

Results: The ALDOCOAT solution deferred complete roof replacement, a very costly proposition given the size of this roof, for at least another 10 years. The solution sealed all leaks and water intrusion, and the reflective finish has reduced the facility’s energy costs. The savings from the reduced energy bills achieved in the first year have been substantial, exceeding the labor to install the entire ALDOCOAT system.

In summary, the EPDM restoration solution has provided ongoing financial and operational benefit. It has provided the owner a proven and tested alternative to costly roof replacement, which also adds tear off material to area landfills..

Spring Tips for Product Application and Handling

The early spring brings with it an uptick in business tied to rising temperatures through much of the country and the ability to begin new projects that cannot be executed in the winter. While it is getting warmer, we still need to be prudent during these transition weeks as we apply and store products.

Here are some tips to keep in mind.

Product Application

While daytime highs may be summer-like, it is typical for evenings to remain cool and ambient temperature swings to be considerable. The time change has allowed us an extra hour of sunlight later in the day and can add to a false sense of security.

Be cautious not to apply material too late in the afternoon as the sun goes down and temperatures drop.

Make sure to allow for at least three hours of sunlight on freshly spray product to insure a “skin” that may protect the coating against dew and cool temps. On a cloudy or overcast day, allow up to an hour longer.

In the morning, give yourself time to properly stage all equipment and product and plan on spraying once the dew is flashed off the roof completely. Any surface moisture will inhibit product adhesion to the substrate and adversely affect short- and long term product performance.

Shipping Lead Time

As we surge into the busy season, keep in mind that Aldo runs production of all products on a Just-In- Time basis. We have been fortunate with very short lead times from our supplier base. This allows us to put your orders in our production planning system the day we receive them, schedule production and ship your order within 48 hours, which is the time frame in which we ship over 90% of all orders. This system guarantees that you will get fresh product on the job site for all those large projects to where we ship 55 gallon drums. So work with your Aldo sales rep on specific project requirements and order product with a pre-determined ship date. This we can make sure you get fresh product on the day you need it.

Product Handling

Always keep pails and drums out of direct sunlight at all times. Cover all packaging with tarps and you will maximize shelf life and insure you are applying fresh, premium ALDOCOAT material.

Energy Sensitive Solutions including Reflective Coatings Prominent at Roofing Expo

The Roofing Expo held February 22 – 24 in Orlando was a showcase of reflective roof coatings, green roof applications, and other energy sensitive solutions and technologies. Advances in energy saving roof systems and applications were prominently displayed by suppliers of roof products and evolving roof technologies.

The Aldo team was pleased to meet with contractors, consultants, and suppliers from throughout North America and abroad including Canada India, China and Japan. The growing contractor interest and consideration of reflective coating solutions was evident throughout the show, and business was initiated and booked at the expo.

RRCI Annual Meeting Covers New Research Projects and Cool Roof Rebate Programs

Bob Brenk, President of Aldo Products Company and a past president of RRCI, attended the annual meeting for the Reflective Roof Coatings Institute (RRCI) held on February 21st in Orlando . The annual meeting for RRCI included updates on the work of the institute and scientific studies exploring the impact of reflective coatings on extension of roof lives and the impact of anti-microbial solutions on roof systems’ solar reflectance.

RRCI meeting participants were given a look inside the “cool-roof” rebate program operated by Florida Power & Light (FPL), the state’s largest single electric utility. Participants also heard reports on the work of FPL and others to build governmental, consumer, and business awareness of the benefits of cool roofs and rebate programs.

ALDOCOAT 400 EXPANDS PRODUCT RATINGS AND APPLICATIONS

February 21, 2012–ALDOCOAT 400, a premium reflective acrylic roof coating produced by Aldo Products Company, is expanding its market share and contractor base and has been rated by Energy Star, the US government’s program for rating products that save energy costs and are environmentally focused.

“We are thrilled with the recent Energy Star ratings for ALDOCOAT 400 and its continued growth in market share and customer base,” said Bob Brenk, president of Aldo Products Company. “Building owners with the assistance of consultants and contractors appear to be recognizing the economic, environmental, and performance benefits of ALDOCOAT 400,” added Brenk.

ALDOCOAT 400 is an advanced acrylic formulation available and carries Miami Dade and Florida Building Code approvals for applications to metal roof substrates and to spray polyurethane foam. Additionally ALDOCOAT 400 is Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) and CA Title 24 approved. It is designed for direct-to-substrate applications, for use over spray polyurethane foam and is an integral component of the FM 4470 ALDOCOAT Reinforced Acrylic System. ALDOCOAT 400 has exceptional dirt pick up resistance enabling it to maintain a bright white surface longer than all premium brand roof coatings.

Message from the President

This year began with weeks of mild winter weather through much of the country. These favorable conditions have contributed to increased demand for our products including coatings, primers and accessory items. While we can expect a winter blast sometime soon, not having to break out a snow shovel is fine with me.

Last week we held our first Vendor Appreciation Luncheon at Restaurant 46 in Kannapolis, NC near our home office. I felt it was important as our business grows to recognize our strategic partners including those supplying raw materials, logistics, financial, and marketing services. At the luncheon, we named Southeastern Freight Lines and Brenntag Southeast as Aldo’s 2011 Logistics and Raw Materials Vendors of the Year. These awards were based on results from the Aldo Annual Vendor Evaluation Program under the direction of Jim Weaver, Aldo’s Purchasing and Logistics Manager.

The Aldo team appreciates the tremendous support that it receives from our Vendor Partners. We view this team as a strategic asset, helping us provide quality products and service to our customers.

Finally, the first quarter of every year is trade show season for Aldo. We are pleased to report the encouraging activity we heard at the SprayFoam Convention & Expo 2012 earlier this month in Dallas. The show set a record for attendance. We are also looking forward to the 2012 International Roofing Expo in Orlando next week. If you are planning to attend, please come by and see us at Booth 562.

ALDOCOAT 386 White Polyurethane

After significant research and development efforts, we are pleased to announce the addition of ALDOCOAT 386 Polyurethane White (Aliphatic) to our product line. This high quality, single component, aliphatic polyurethane coating gives us another coating suitable for application during cooler weather conditions that can be problematic for water-based coatings.

ALDOCOAT 386 can be applied as a topcoat over ALDOCOAT 384 in single ply restoration, spray polyurethane foam and low slope applications where acrylics may not be the best choice. ALDOCOAT 386 has been rated by the Cool Roof Rating Council (CRRC) with 87% solar reflectance, 91% thermal emmittance and SRI of 110. Once the three year data is available, we will submit this product for ENERGY STAR approval as we do with all products.

Case Study: Fast Food Restaurant EPDM Roof Restoration

Issue: The operator of this high revenue food outlet was facing a dilemma. The facility’s black EPDM membrane was leaking and perhaps approaching the end of its service life. The disruption to his business that a roof tear off would cause was unacceptable. He had to seek another solution. Fortunately for him, the contractor he called was an Approved Applicator for all ALDOCOAT Roof Coating Systems.

Solution: The tested and proven solution was a complete restoration of the EPDM membrane with ALDOCOAT 384 Polyurethane Aluminum.

The contractor’s complete evaluation of the existing roof determined the membrane had sufficient integrity and service life remaining to be eligible for a coating system. There were no serious splitting and openings of the seams; and the membrane had not shrunk so as to create issues where it was flashed up the parapet wall. The contractor started by clearly identifying all the leak areas prior to washing the entire roof surface. Caution was exercised so no damage was done to the membrane itself, and no excess water was forced into the building during the pressure washing stage of the project.

After cleaning, ALDOSEAL 385 Sealant was used to seal the leak areas and seal all roof penetrations. Special attention was paid to the rooftop HVAC units. Since ALDOCOAT 384 Polyurethane has such excellent adhesion directly to virtually any surface, no primer was needed whatsoever. Eliminating this step saves the owner money and allows the contractor to complete the project faster than he would otherwise. Following the sealant a base coat of ALDOCOAT 384 Polyurethane was applied at a rate of 1.25 gallons per 100 square feet. After 24 hours cure time, the crew can return and apply the top coat at the same coverage rate.

Results: The finished look, sliver aluminum in color, will give the appearance of a new roof system completely. The owner of this restaurant not only solved his leak issues but is sure to save on his energy costs by eliminating his heat absorbing black roof surface.

Southeastern Freight Lines and Brenntag Southeast were recognized as the Logistics and Raw Materials Vendors of the Year respectively for Aldo, based on the Aldo Annual Vendor Evaluation Program under the direction of Jim Weaver, Purchasing and Logistics Manager for Aldo.
